Beyond the northern boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park lies the Northern Dales, an area of spectacular scenery and countryside. Bordered by the Eden Valley and Hadrians Wall, the Northern Dales encompasses the Northumberland National Park, The Tyne Valley, Teesdale and Weardale.
Visitors to these parts come from far and wide to marvel at the numerous and breathtaking waterfalls which are scattered throughout the area. Cauldron Snout is the longest waterfall in England and thunders down the River Tees for 180 metres until it reaches High Force, once thought to be the highest waterfall in England. Underground there are a series of caves and deep potholes, perfect for exploring and climbing.
The Northumberland National Park is a vast area of wild, unspoiled countryside, with beautiful green rolling hills and meandering rivers, abundant with wildlife, including many species of birds, the now rare red squirrel, and in the summer month's adders can be spotted basking in the sunshine. The plant life and flora are stunning and the views are unsurpassed. This is perfect walking and cycling country and there are numerous paths and bridleways to experience, including the famous Pennine Way.
This is an historic area with many sites of interest to visit including the remains of Roman settlements, burial grounds and hill forts, and one of the most famous landmarks to be found here is Hadrians Wall.
The Cheviot Hills form the boundary between the Northern Dales and Scotland, where crystal clear rivers wind their way through the valleys, fed from the gently rounded hills above and where visitors can take advantage of the many picturesque riverside picnic areas and maybe even spot otters playing in the shallow waters.
