Nestling between the Yorkshire Wolds, the Vale of York and the North York Moors National Park, lies an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), known as the Howardian Hills.

The breathtakingly beautiful landscape here is rich and green, with softly rolling hills and woodlands. Small traditional villages and farms are scattered amongst the fields and pastures, forming this picture perfect scenery. Visitors to the area will find a wide choice of accommodation, shops and restaurants, and a stunning area of countryside and pretty villages just waiting to be explored.

There is plenty to see and do here, there are medieval monasteries and castles to visit and the area is also home to several of the countries historic stately homes and country houses, including Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Hovingham Hall, Gilling Castle and Newburgh Priory. Yorkshire Lavender is another popular tourist attraction, and offers a full day out with its Lavender Gardens, nursery, shops and visitor centre, there is a restaurant and a tea room and a delightful deer park and sculpture park, making this the perfect day out, whatever the weather for all the family.

Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the wonderful natural landscape, and walkers can enjoy some of the signed circular walks in and around the villages of Welburn, Nunnington and Hovingham. Several walks have been especially planned to take visitors out amongst the delights of the local wildlife.
