Stanage Edge

Details for Stanage Edge

High up in the Peak District above Hathersage, and just to the south west of Sheffield, lies the dramatic and imposing escarpment of Stanage Edge. At its highest point is 'High Neb' some 458 metres above sea level. In days gone by the rocks were worked to produce grindstones for local industry, and some remnants can still be seen scattered around.

Famous for its excellent climbing it attracts walkers and climbers from all over the world, and with 800 or more named climbs it is hardly surprising that it is so well visited. Historical records show that climbing began here as early as the 1890's and has grown rapidly in popularity over the years.

The moorlands around Stanage are composed of grass, bracken and heather, though not quite so lush as they once were due to the erosion by the sheer number of walkers who tread the well loved trails across from Redmires to the pretty villages of  Hathersage, Bamford, Ashbourne, Bakewell and Castleton.

The moors form an ever changing yet stunningly beautiful natural backdrop to the dark gritstone crags, and brightly coloured hand gliders can often be seen drifting in the skies high above. Visitors to the area will find numerous paths and tracks leading through the countryside, and can enjoy exploring the many hamlets and villages which lie along the way.

Easily reached by car from Ringinglow in Sheffield, or on foot for serious walkers, the area is also well served by bus and rail, making it very accessible for everyone. There is a signed walk from Redmires, over the ridge around the edge of the cliffs and down the valley into Hathersage where there are lovely tea rooms, a few shops and cosy traditional pubs waiting to offer refreshment for those tired feet and weary legs!

There are also some interesting attractions in the nearby area...
